Born in Darlington in 1977, James Paterson has always worked towards being a professional artist throughout his schooling and further education where he studied for a Foundation Art Degree at Queen Elizabeth 6th Form College and then on to complete a Fine Art Degree at Nottingham Trent University.
With a passion for the history of art and taking inspiration from everyday objects, popular icons and print adverts, James works primarily in oils to create his nostalgic paintings that seem to yearn for a time gone by.
He has both a figurative and abstract style to his work and encourages the viewer to become part of the painting to form their own ideas of what it might represent. James explains:
"I have always tried to make my paintings a collaboration, a calculation in which an answer can only be found with you as part of the equation."
