Jack Vettriano

Born in Scotland in the early 1950s, Jack Vettriano was a mining engineer and only painted as a hobby until his breakthrough year in 1988 when he entered two canvases for the Royal Scottish Academy annual show. Both pieces sold on the first day leading to several galleries wanting to sell his work and his career as a full-time artist began.

Jack moved to Edinburgh soon after and he enjoyed a string of successful exhibitions in city as well as London, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and New York. He has many famous private collectors including Robbie Coltrane and Hollywood superstar Jack Nicholson. The Singing Butler is his most famous painting and it sold for £744,800 at Sotheby’s leading him to become known as The People’s Painter. Today, he is considered the most successful and popular Scottish artist in history.

It is Jack Vettriano’s instantly recognisable style that has made him a household name; his nostalgic subject matter, enigmatic narrative detail, and unmistakable use of colour give the viewer the strange but pleasurable sensation of having stepped into the opening scene of a film noir.
