Alastair Gibson/ Carbon art 45
Alastair Gibson was born in 1962 near Johannesburg, South Africa where he attended King Edward Vll boy’s school followed by two years of compulsory national service in the South African army. This experience as well as exposure to marine life during annual family vacations to the Natal South Coast is what inspired Alastair to take sculpture classes where he could interpret the way he saw these interesting fish.
With a keen interest in motor racing, influenced by his father, as well as education in balance-engineering, Alastair headed off to Europe with an ambition to work in the motor sport industry. This resulted in a career of 22 years! He spent 14 years in Formula One, 4 of those years as Lead Mechanic for the Benetton F1 Team and 10 years as race team Chief Mechanic for the BAR and Honda Grand Prix Teams.
Combining his motorsport engineering experience and his love for the natural world, Alastair recycles F1 car parts which he sources from Grand Prix teams to create his signature Carbon Fibre Sculptures.
Alastair’s work has been exhibited and purchased world wide by collectors in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, Middle East and South Africa. Alastair’s work can currently be spotted in selected galleries in the UK, the United States, Europe, Russia, Dubai and South Africa.
In his tenth year as a full-time artist, Alastair has been recognised as a forerunner in carbon fibre sculpting where him and his team are undertaking a variety of projects including new releases, private commissions, installations and even a lifestyle product collection in his bespoke studio ‘Studio 45’ near Oxford, England.
With the Carbon Art Studio nearby and a personal connection to Alastair, we have a great relationship with the artist himself and his team.
