Self-taught as a teenager, Nigel spent many hours at the Leeds Art Gallery gaining inspiration from the old masters. This passion for art led him on an exciting trip from Leeds to Paris at the age of 20 when he hitch-hiked and slept rough to get to see the Picasso retrospective exhibition in the Louvre – he recalls this time as quite an adventure!
Nigel also has a fierce passion for music. He was in a Celtic rock band for over 20 years, touring the UK and Europe and even playing at Glastonbury. Today, he still regularly plays in two rock bands.
Following a varied creative career, Nigel obtained a Fine Art degree in his late 50s and went on to teach art before becoming a full-time artist after being signed by leading publisher Washington Green. He paints landscapes, beach scenes, and figurative works where he draws inspiration from his childhood growing up in 1950s Yorkshire.
“My work depicts moments in time. Incidents, usually, between people that speak of human behaviour and relationships.”
